
Aligarh: Newly admitted undergraduate and postgraduate students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Department of Political Science were familiarized with the academic and social aspects of the university and the indelible mark that the founder of the AMU, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, left on the country in the orientation program on “Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the Aligarh Movement”.
Welcoming the new students, Professor Nisar Ahmad Khan (Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences) said: “As new students make their transition to university life, it is imperative that they understand how Sir Syed defended education after witnessing major upheavals. of his time. »
“Sir Syed recognized education as the most important tool through which Indians from normal backgrounds could emerge from a disadvantaged position and compete with nations which were at the pinnacle of education and scientific advancement,” said he added.
Speaking on the “Contribution of the Aligarh Movement to the Muslim Renaissance”, Professor Mirza Asmer Beg (Department of Political Science) pointed out: “Sir Syed founded the Scientific Society in 1863 and translated major works of science and modern arts in urdu. He published journals such as the Aligarh Institute Gazette and the Tehzibul Akhlaq in a systemic movement to reform the social, political and educational aspects of the Muslim community”.
“Sir Syed raised awareness about religious tolerance, freedom of speech and other liberal values,” said Professor Arshi Khan (Department of Political Science).
He was speaking on “Sir Syed’s views on diversity, accommodation and nation building”.
In the discussion on ‘Sir Syed as a public intellectual’ Professor M Shafey Kidwai (Department of Mass Communication) explained how Sir Syed started a movement for the intellectual, educational, social and cultural regeneration of society in particular and the Indian community of all religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds in general.
Dr Mohammad Shahid (Deputy Director, Sir Syed Academy) lectured on “An Introduction to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the Aligarh Movement”, Dr Nafis Faizi (Department of Community Medicine) spoke on “Sir Syed as phenomenon” and Dr Rahat Abrar (Former Principal, Urdu Academy) highlighted “Sir Syed as a political ideologue and activist”.
