Dan O’Donnell examines the real reasons why Democratic-led states are all suddenly dropping their masked mandates, and it has absolutely nothing to do with what the science says.

It’s a miracle! Just in time to save Democrats from the political fallout of their draconian mask mandates, the science of masking has changed.
Monday night, as Democratic governors and health departments in New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Oregon and even California all announced the end dates for their school-wide mask mandates. of the state and that Oregon and California also ended their indoor mask mandates for the general public, CNN Medical expert Dr. Leanna Wen said the science suddenly changed, making unnecessary mask wearing.
“There was and is a time and a place for pandemic restrictions,” she explained. “But when they were installed it was always with the understanding that they would be removed as soon as possible. And in this case, the circumstances have changed. The number of cases is down. Also, the science has changed.
What an astonishing, extraordinary and not at all suspicious coincidence! The science just changed just when five different Democratic states needed it!
Obviously, the science hasn’t really changed at all. In California, for example, a statewide mask mandate was reimplemented on July 28.andwhile the seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases was 7,864 and the seven-day average of deaths was 26. On Monday, when science suddenly determined that masks were no longer needed, the average over seven days of new cases was 35,365 and the seven-day average of deaths was 180.
COVID-19 in California is now almost seven times deadlier and four and a half times more prevalent than it was when science determined masks were needed again…but science says masks are no more required. That sounds a little, uh, unscientific.
It also goes against the advice that Dr. Wen was giving just five months ago.
“Masks are a very powerful layer of protection,” she said on CNN on September 23.rd, adding that “we are far” from a point at which masking in schools would no longer be necessary. It should be noted here that in California, on the day she said this, the seven-day average of cases was 9,726 and the seven-day average of deaths was 101.
Now, according to Dr. Wen and the California Department of Health, the science has changed so much it’s safe to unmask even though COVID is now 3.6 times more prevalent and nearly twice as deadly. It’s fine science, folks. Powerful fine science!
The only COVID numbers that have declined in the past five months have been public support for mask mandates. A Monmouth University poll found support for statewide mask orders fell from 63% in September to 55% in December to 52% in January. 70% of respondents “agree with the feeling that it is time to accept that Covid is here to stay and that we just have to get on with our lives”. Predictably, 89% of Republicans agree with this, but the same is true for 71% of independents (and only 47% of Democrats).
The Kaiser Family Foundation’s January survey found that “about three in four adults, including majorities in age, gender, race and ethnicity, and income groups, say ‘tired and ‘frustrated’ to describe how they feel about the current state of the pandemic in the US”
Previous polls have shown feelings about the pandemic tended to be strongly correlated with political affiliation, but now “tiredness” and “frustrated” are the dominant emotions expressed by supporters, with at least seven in ten Democrats, Independents and Republicans saying every word describes how they feel about the current state of the pandemic.
This, in a nutshell, is why the science has changed so rapidly – because political science says support for ongoing COVID restrictions is untenable in an election year. The rush to drop mask mandates correlates with the lack of scientific data; query data only.
The magically shifting science should, however, finally and completely prove to the voting public that almost all of the draconian restrictions of the past two years served no interest other than the political needs of the Democrats who enforced them.
